As a small girl, I was always fascinated with the glamorous fashion and beauty of my mother. Not only did I look up to my mother, she always resembled beautiful fashion pieces in front of my eyes. I have seen old pictures of my mother when she was younger and many of her popular fashion pieces that she wore gracefully were astoundingly beautiful. My mother was a huge fan of very old drama movies, and many of the fashion displayed in the films inspired the way she dressed growing up as a woman. What really inspired me to write this article on the “Little Black Dress,” was my inspiration from the Audrey Hepburn film, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
Simply, the Little black dress is an evening or cocktail dress, cut quite short and designed in a very elegant fashion for the woman’s body. The dress originated from the 1920’s from designs of Coco Chanel. Coco Chanel was a famous French fashion designer during the 20th century era with a passion and emphasis on menswear and women’s fashion. Her elaborate creativity and design in fashion has made Chanel an important figure in 20th century fashion. In today’s fashion, the Little black dress is considered as an essential wardrobe fashion piece that completes the look. The Little black dress is worn for mostly special occasions and best worn with a jacket and sexy pumps for a daytime business wear or worn with elegant jewelry and accessories for an evening night out. Whatever the occasion may be, the Little black dress is always a well-known powerful fashion statement.
During the 1920’s era, black was often worn for a period of mourning for a lost loved one and considered inappropriate to be worn outside under such circumstances. During the medieval times, many women wore different types of black dresses for special ceremonies, weddings, funerals, and sad occasions. It was also common for women during World War 1 and the Spanish flu outbreak to dress in black publicly. This was to symbolize the many deaths during this tragic time. Many women during the Great Depression era wore black dresses during this very tough time and era. From the past years of the famous Little black dress being popular amongst fashion and difficult era times, the famous Little black dress is still highly respected and worn throughout the 21st century.
